Hearing God's Voice in God's Word

Tuesday evenings 6:30–8:00pm
January 13 - April 14, 2026

“That’s just your interpretation! I interpret it differently.” We’ve all heard some version of that, haven’t we? Knowing how to interpret is only half of the problem we face these days when people have largely adopted an “I believe, therefore it’s true — for me” attitude. The other half is asking the question why do people prefer to interpret the Bible in the ways that they do? There are all sorts of factors in play that influence people’s frame of reference, usually partially or even completely unrecognized. What informs our inevitable biases when we read the Bible, and how did we get there? Is there such a thing as a “right interpretation”? And if so, how are we supposed to know if an interpretation is right? These are the questions we will be investigating in this class: what you’re thinking when you’re interpreting. Past students have often said that this (“Hermeneutics”) class was the single most influential class they have taken in studying the Bible. Come, and find out why!

Psalms

Thursday evenings 6:30–8:00pm
January 15 - April 16, 2026

Throughout the history of both Judaism and the Church, the book of Psalms has occupied a special place within the lives of believers. In the Psalms we find encouragement, comfort, hope, and inspiration as they express the whole range of human experience and emotions. But that’s not all. More recent perspectives of the Psalms, together with very ancient methods, are reopening whole new vistas in how to read the Psalms. In this class we will explore these ancient/new strategies in order to gain some striking and awe-inspiring insights into the teachings of this very familiar book. This class will change how you read Psalms from now on!

Current and Past Courses

You can register below to receive lecture recordings and workbooks of past classes.

Torah (Genesis–Deuteronomy)

Tuesday evenings 6:30–8:00 pm
Sep. 9 – Dec. 9 (no class Thanksgiving week)

In this course we will not only be looking at the main themes of each of these books, but how each one teaches us about how to live our lives today in light of those truths. Far from merely narrating to us the people and events of the remote past, we will be looking at what God communicates to us about the past for our present, and how that in turn shapes our hopes for the future.

How We Got the Bible

Thursday evenings 6:30–8:00 pm
Sep. 11 – Dec. 11 (no class Thanksgiving Day)
Often when we try to explain our faith to others, we ground our beliefs in the Bible. But for many people today, including believers, we don't have a very grounded knowledge or conviction about how we got it, and therefore why we should listen to it. Internet misinformation is everywhere, and if we have a shaky foundation, our very faith is in jeopardy. This course gives you both a coherent, big picture view of how we got our Bible, and specific details which give weight and credibility to those claims.

New Testament Biblical Theology: Gospels

6-week course through the Gospels and Acts, originally taught Spring 2025.
