Benefits of Looking Up

The writer of Psalm 121 started by saying, “I will lift up my eyes to the hills.” It is a good practice to look up to the hills, because they make a statement of strength and protection. When we look down, we can lose the perspective that comes by looking up.

The writer moves quickly to an important question: “From where does my help come?” The answer follows: “My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Looking up to the mountain can help us gain perspective, but we need the Source of the mountain to give us the life-changing help we need.

I am reminded of the human tendency to become so focused on quick solutions to our concerns that we forget the One Who has the real answers. Short-term help may seem appropriate, but it may not give us a long-term solution.

The writer of the Psalm found the Source – Creator God – involved in his daily walk: “He will not let your foot slip.” God does not sleep – He does not even take a short nap. He provides the shade of protection and light even at night. He keeps us from harm, watches over our life, and is aware of our coming and going – “both now and forevermore.”

There are benefits to reminding someone to “look up” when they are feeling down, but it will have little lasting significance if we do not help them “look to Jesus.” There is hope and peace in accepting what He wants to give.
