They Did It For Us

They Did It For Us

November 22, 2019

Currently, I am reading a fun history book, Out Where the West Begins, by Philip F. Anschutz. This is Part 2 in a series that makes American history come alive in easy reading with just enough detail to keep my attention but not so much that I get lost. The first volume deals with the East moving West and the inventions that changed the world. This one focuses on the late 1800’s. It has much information pertaining to Middle America where I grew up.

Two things have me pondering. One is that, growing up in Colorado, I must have studied this history, but I do not recall learning most of it. The other is to realize how those men and women gave their time, energy, resources – their lives – for causes from which they received little reward – but we benefit so much.

They established the park system. Think of America without Yellowstone National Park and many others. They worked with states to determine the best use of water, like the Colorado River that runs through that state, Arizona and California. They planned for highways and railroads. This all took place through Washington, D.C. without the convenience of email, internet or texting – so much travel!

This causes me to remember what I enjoy because of the effort of my parents and grandparents. I am remembering teachers, pastors, neighbors and extended family members who influenced me when I had no thought of what they were contributing. I was just doing life – taking in at their expense.

My thoughts turned to the Bible to recall stories and principles by which I live. Most of all, the plan of Creator God carried out by Savior Jesus so that I have a life of Peace now and a secure Hope for tomorrow – and forever. I am humbled to think that they did it for our benefit.

A history book is good for me and I appreciate Phillip Anschutz for writing it. I hope this reminder helps you as well.
